Panicking a bit. Speed Cameras

Hiya

Yesterday I was speeding, I was doing 56 in a 50 (sat nav) and went by a camera. What happens now, do cameras flash to let you know you've been caught or is the first thing you know when you get a ticket through the post (im presuming thats how it comes)

I know I shouldnt have been speeding and dont usually, was just off in my own little world and hadnt realised the dual carriageway wasnt normal speed limit until I saw the sign after the camera.

Panicking a little bit as ive not had my licence for a year, and scared of what my oh will say if i get a ticket. not in a bad way scared, just scared that i will disapoint him by getting a ticket.

thanks

gxx

  • Few points to remember here.

    1. Not all cameras flash.
    2. Those that do flash (Gatso cameras mainly) will only flash when they detect a speeding vehicle.
    3. Not all flashes result in a penalty charge being issued. Anectodal evidence suggests only 1 in every 4 "flashes" results in a ticket.

Ultimately, there's little you can do until a ticket hits the door mat or until 14 days have passed (assuming you're the registered keeper, if not it could take longer).

Also, if it comes to it, don't tell this bit to the magistrate. A fixed penalty ticket is nowhere near as bad as a conviction for driving without due care and attention. ;)

You should be OK. The minimum for a ticket is normally the speed limit +10% +2mph. But most Scamera Partnerships will tend to go after the bigger fish.

Whether it flashes depends on the type of camera - but most do.

You will have to sit and wait - a Notice of Intended Prosectution needs to be served on the registered keeper with 14 days (Are you the registered keeper ?). No point worrying until it happens.

The offence of speeding is complete even at 1mph above the limit, however there are ACPO guidelines on prosecuting which are 10% +2mph over (so 57 in a 50) - You may have just been under the limit the camera is set at, but if the camera was activated , you would normally be looking at receiving a fixed penalty of a £60 ticket and three points on your licence OR in many areas you could be offered a "Speed Awareness course" instead (still have to pay for the course, but no points).

thanks, will just have to sit and wait then. im not the registered keeper, my oh half is, but the car is registered to our address so will get the details here. if i do get a ticket there is no way im contesting it, will just pay it and hope that will be the end of it till insurance renewal time.

forgot to add, my oh is at sea and not due back for 2 months, does that mean im really up **** creek if only he can deal with it?

My wife got caught doing 34 in a 30mph zone. In her defence it had changed from a 40 to 30 only recently.

She got a summons through, as she had a clean license she was able to attend course that prevented her from having 3 points. She just had to pay the £60 fine.

Be very careful then remember 6 points in the 1st 2 years and you will have to take your tests again.
