Faulty netbook, no receipt, please help

Options
I bought a netbook from Argos a couple of days ago, and since then it has become apparent the thing is faulty: numerous connection problems with the internet and constant BSOD's.

The problems I have returning the product are:

1) I paid cash and have lost the receipt, therefore no proof of purchase.

2) I purchased the netbook at a store miles away from where I live so I can't take it back to that store.

However, the product box DOES have a large Argos sticker on it.

I know if I take it back to my local store they are likely to refuse a refund/exchange as I have no POP, even though I can prove it was bought from (a) Argos store.

What is my best course of action, or am I up the creek?

I have considered purchasing another and assuming that one is not faulty swapping the units and returning the faulty one with my new receipt...naughty I know but I just want a product that works!

Advice?

Without proof of postage you CAN'T prove anything, neither when it was purchased nor whether it was purchased at all. TBH I think you are floating without a paddle, unless you can take it back to the same store, hoping someone may remember you I don't think there's much you can do, other than try re-installing the OS to see if it fixes the problem.

BTW, the last part isn't just "naughty" it's actually fraud.

    You'll then end up with 2 netbooks...do you need/want 2? Is that (b)?

You will probably find that the netbook box shows the serial number of the product.

This is why the number one rule of buying anything costing above £100 is...

Always, always, always pay via credit card or Visa Debit if you have no access to credit.

I bought a shaver from argos which went faulty, I had paid by credit card they were able to track the transaction on their system and I got a refund.

Does Visa Debit give you protection like a credit card?? Was not aware of it; but would be helpful to me because I use a debit, not credit card.

when I was in retail (not argos) we could look up transactions on our till, ask them if they can - serial numbers should help

You can prove it CAME from argos, not that it was BOUGHT from argos.

A serial number will help the manufacturer determine when it was made, but when selling an item most places (if any) don't actually note the serial number.

The Argos you bought it from MAY be able to track the purchase, but it'll be very difficult if possible at all, unless you knew the exact date and time you bought it.
