Road Tax renewal con

My wife has a VW Polo (2004) and 2 weeks ago received her renewal reminder for her road tax. This shows a figure of £120 for the year from 1 April. However in the 2008 budget it was announced that the tax bandings and amounts due were changing over the next two years from 2008. Some of the tax amounts were going down according to the co2 emissions. The Polo is one of those cars where the emissions are 122g/km and therefore the amount due should be £90 from 1 April. My wife went into the post office the other day to renew the tax and was told that their computer systems are showing a tax due of £120! It is the same if you go online direct to DVLA. We called into the local DVLA office and they finally admitted that their systems will not be updated with the correct figure of £90 until 1 April. How many people have already renewed their road tax at the incorrect rate? Will they be offered a refund? Of course not. It is another sneaky way of making you pay more. You can check what you should be paying by making a search under "road tax"

  • I dont see anything sneeky about it. The new rates are effective from 1st April so of course you wont get it until then. What do you expect?
  • Only just seen the other thread regarding car tax bands!!

Easiest thing to do is wait until midnight 1st April and renew online at the new rate or at 9am when the Post Office opens. :)

I seem to remember that when these changes were first introduced I received a cheque from DVLA for an overpayment of car tax due to the change

  • By paying ( in advance to help the govt ) before 1 April I am still only getting the tax from 1 April. DVLA have known for 2 years that the rates were changing. Surely they could programme their computer systems to account for that
