Shelter has information for homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages, including info on various government schemes and advice on how to deal with arrears.

Thanks DMG - I did converse with one re my rental property but unfortunately I have reduced the market price so much now that they couldnt offer me even as much as the mortgage on it. I havent approached re my home yet though - TBH my heart's breaking coming to terms with the fact that I am likely to lose it - been working on it years and is a real family home for me and my kids. I really did believe that I would find a job, as I have never had any problems in the past - but think by taking my ex-employers to employment tribunal (backed by union solicitors) has really damaged my reputation locally :(
Sad thing is - my situation is so down to wrong timing/ credit crunch/ housing market.. plus I fixed my home mortgage just before credit crsis and so am paying an excrutiating amount (4 times what I would be if in a position to get the same value mortgage now)..
    Think I'm clutching at straws...

As for comment re me receiving benefits - I was referring to the inability to claim income-related benefits (which then enable you to get lots of other help re costs etc) - which I cannot get despite having no income?

Many thanks to to you all for reading/ advice x

PS - contacted my local MP who is going to look into things on my behalf, not sure what he can do though but there's always hope (however pathetic)!

You are getting all you are entitled to though. Child benefit and child tax credits for having children. And JSA for activly looking for full time employment. Only other thing someone would be entitled to is mortgage support interest but as you own 2 places you are not entitled.
What about your childrens dad? Does he not pay maintenance?
  • I guessed I was getting everything i was entitled to, but thought it was worth a post in case i'd missed anything (you never know).. kids dad never paid a penny - tried it on with my little sister and walked years ago. TBH he got his 'come-up-ence' in that he is now disabled and cannot work - dont have much to do with him and he couldnt help even if (by some miracle) he actually wanted to! Just need to summon up the energy to give my place the once-over and hopefully sell up - I know i'm lucky in that at least I have this option, but it's still heartbreaking.. You never know, the employment tribunal may end up coughing up - but even thats been a year coming now and doesnt seem to be going anywhere. Think I've been a complete control freak most of my life and its so hard not being in control of things - going to let fate play its part now I suppose, seems like there's nothing else left to try.

    Again, thanks for the advice..

No matter how much I hated someone I would never be happy that they are now disabled!!!! Very harsh thing to say.

You have no idea what he has done to her, anything could have happened for all you know.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind

The comment is still unacceptable, imo.

  • thankyou lynz - you're on the right lines - my comment is harsh but if he were a pet he would have been put down years ago! World would be a far better place if people like him were simply not in it - just a fact unfortunately - and lucky you karenx if you not come into contact with anyone like him! FYI - his 'disability' is more in his head - spends 24/7 playing computer games but cant work (quite literally) because his 'feet hurt' - no diagnosis but sits at home, mortgage paid for, money for his food and bills, claiming ESA - he's actually on holiday in Egypt at the moment not that I'm bitter or anything :) !! Anyway... I digress lol

Well if he was on ESA he will be assesed by CSA to pay £5 a week. Not much but more than what you get just now.

yet another hard working person shafted by the system she has paid into her whole life. She would better off letting her houses be repossessed and living off the system as a single parent. Please don't though. But god forbid someone who has worked hard get help when they need it, whilst people who have never worked get all the money of the day thrown at them for sitting on their !!!!!!.

My advise would be go down to the CAB they are the people most likely to be able to help you.

    Good luck!

I was in a similar situation just over ten years ago. At that time, so long as my (rental) property was on the market and I could demonstrate that I was making reasonable efforts to sell it, I was able to receive means-tested benefits.

So OP, please see if you can speak to an adjudication officer and find out whether they are able to disregard the property that you own and don't live in.
