setting up a second wireless network via homeplugs

Okay this is quite complicated

My house is an annex to the rear of my mothers home. I have set up the internet in my house via an extension lead and homeplugs. i.e homeplug at her telephone point at the front door, then an extension lead at the last electricity point next to my house, run into my house with the other homeplug on the end.

At the minute I have hardwired the desktop at the other end but can i set up a wifi network on the end of this second homeplug, as I have just bought a laptop.

This is an old vistorian house so I cannot run an ethernet through it to the Annex at the back. (My mun would kill me LOL)

    Have you tried simply plugging the home plug into a socket in the annex? e.g. no extension lead to the annex. If you are going to run a cable to the annex, then why not an Ethernet cable?

    You can connect any device to the homeplug in the annex e.g. a wireless router or wireless access point.

    short answer, yes.

    see if you can get your ISP to give you a wireless router free to use too (tell them your main one is playing up and you'll leave/switch to someone else to get one if they can't give you one for free -see other threads on here)

    Does the electricity supply for the annexe come from the same point as the main house? Or is it on a separate supply (own meter etc)? If the former, you can just use the second Homeplug at the nearest socket to the laptop, as espresso suggests.
    If you want the laptop to be wireless, you can buy a Homeplug that has wireless built in, so you just plug it in wherever you wish in the annexe, and the laptop will connect wirelessly to it.
    But the simplest answer (as JasX suggests) might be to see if the laptop can connect wirelessly direct to a wireless router situated in the main house near the telephone master socket.

    Me too. I used to have iffy wireless coverage in parts on the house but this works perfectly for me.

    Actually think I was a little confused in my haste, you'd need a slightly different type of wireless AP to setup a wireless network hanging off then end of a homeplug, if you get one of the ethernet in----> wireless + multi-ethernet out types that'll do it.

    This won't be a sort you can get free from your ISP.

    I use one of these but its apple so you'll not find it the most cost effective piece of kit (£140, £120 if you shop around) :

    http://www.apple.com/uk/airportextreme/

    something like this might do instead:

    (£26, wireless G only)

    or

    (£60, wireless N dual band like the Apple one)
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/186156

    then you could have

    <BT master socket>----phone line----<wireless ADSL modem for house wireless>----ethernet cable----<homeplug1 in house>
    mains electrical circuit
    <homeplug2 in annex>
    ethernet
    <wireless AccessPoint in annex>
    ethernet
    <Desktop PC in annex>
