DIY isn't allowed under the FITs scheme so you won't be able to claim the payments.Thank you for all your posts we have found the Navitron Forums very usefull. This will lose you over 40p a unit generated for the next 25 years.
If you find the right installers then the cost of installed isn't much more than DIY, in fact there are those on the Navitron forums who spent more DIY than they could have got it installed for! (There are of course those companies that will charge many thousands over the odds which need to be avoided)
If you're thinking of installing yourself then getting it signed off by an MCS accredited installer be very careful, thats not the way the scheme is meant to work. Be sure your chosen MCS company is going to co-operate with you before buying the equipment. And remember the equipment needs to be MCS accredited as well.
One final note .... Accredited inverters are in very short supply so you may have to wait a few months to get hold of one.0 -
I can thoroughly recommend the following company who specialise in custom designed solar systems.
email slartibartfast@magrathea.orgThat gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Wasn't it slartybartfast that also designed the jagged coastlines of Norway?

Do a quick scan through the rest of the forum for threads about Solar PV: there are at least two others which have gone through the costs and returns of such systems in the last few weeks.
Briefly though, expect to pay somewhere in the region of 10 to 15 thousand pounds for a system, make sure it is fitted by an MCS approved supplier so that it qualifies for the Government's Feed In Tariffs, and you will get an "income" (made up of the money saved on buying electricity, money earned from exporting to the Grid, and the Government subsidy for each unit generated) of around £800 to £1400 per year.
The point at which this becomes financially better than putting the money in the best returning investment (such as paying it off your mortgage) is somewhere between 10 and 15 years roughly. The Government tariffs are guaranteed and index linked for 25 years, so in that sense it is low risk, but you are putting a large amount of money into a system fixed to your house and if you sell your house you may not get the appropriate extra value on your sale price, so in that sense it is quite high risk.
Do a lot of research before deciding whether or not to go ahead.
