38.04 litres will be the display reading whilst the amount delivered is between 38.04000000and 38.04499999999 (or maybe even 38.04999999999) depending how the rounding is done.

So if you have had exactly 38.04 delivered you have spent 43.70796
If 38.044999999 has been delivered you've actually spent 43.7137 so you have gained .37p whilst 'only' receiving 38.04litres

    Oh god!
I hope the OP has never considered the implications of the accuracy of the meters on the pumps!
    Just what I was thinking.
Is it true or a myth....
Get your fuel early in the morning when it's cold and the fuel is more dense and you'll get more fuel than if you do it when it's warmer / later in the day?
  • Dunno..... Time to get the pipettes and micro-balances out perhaps? There's 0.37p per tank to be saved after all!
  • The price will be rounded to the nearest penny.

In 50% of cases the price will end in >= .5p and be rounded up. In the other 50% of cases the price will end in < .5p and be rounded down.

The gains will cancel out the losses.

What makes the OP think that they are entitled to free petrol?

If I put in 38.04 litres of fuel in at a cost of 114.9p/litre, the price would be £43.70796. I've spent more than £43.70, therefore should pay to the nearest penny, which is £43.71 (link to a rounding up guide).

The garage would need to do the exact above to approximately 5 people to make 1p - wow, that is rip-off Britain at it's prime!
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.

    But that hardly seems fair.
Can I ask Tesco to always make sure I am in the 50% where the price is rounded down? ;)

The gains will cancel out the losses.
Good job the pump price isn't rounded to the nearest £1.00 innit.
Then you would have something to complain about. :rotfl:
  • BTW, when the OP paid £40.71, that included VAT of £6.063191489 (ish :p)

the .37 of a pence or whatever is nothing given that petrol is going up 4p tomorrow according to the manager at my local station.

That'll be 119.9 now. Just dropped a full tank into the Volvo while it's still "cheap".

Fuel duty increases tomorrow by only 1p not 4p,the other 3p must be oil companies weekly increase:mad:
  • You're fooling yourself if you think that the oil companies are mostly to blame for the high cost of petrol/diesel.
