Not under your own steam. (ie It wouldn't pay your costs for pursuing someone yourself)

If your legal cover decided to take the matter to court, they would pay the costs. (Which would ultimately be recovered from the defendant).

They would only take the third party to court if there was a good chance you would win AND they were happy the third party had the means to pay the judgement.

Sounds right. You will need to recover your excess from the other party.
Do you have legal protection insurance? If so,contact them re recovery of your excess. By the way,you do not have to use the insurance companies recommended repairer.

Is this the principle for every insurance company or does it depend on who it is? I've had some repairs done at my local mechanic but these are repairs from an accident which is still being sorted.

Insurance is a financial product. You pay a fee and get certain cash benefits upto a certain limit. How you choose to spend those cash benefits is up to you so yes,you have a legal right to have the repairs done where ever you like. In addition,if your car has a corrosion/bodywork warranty, you would be well advised to have body repairs/paint done at a manuf approved repair facility.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
