Is it worth it I have the possibility of a new job starting in sept but the question is the pay for the new job is a lot less than what I have earned before, but there is a much better wages and job prospects after I have been there for a year. My question is is it better to have a year were I would be low paid and then better prospects or just go for a higher paid job.

How much lower is the pay?
What other benefits are they likely to throw in? Pension? Healthcare? Training?
Do they have a proven track record of better job prospects for their employees?
Is it what you really want to do? Or would you be bored? What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about? :eek:Official "Bring back Mark and Lard NOW! or else (please)" Member 160 -
The pay is about 4000 grand less but when you get in the job options are fantastic but i would have to work at least a year 1st.0

If you can afford to take the pay cut, and this is the job you want, then go for it! If you cannot afford the pay cut, then find another way to either make up the money, or get the job you want without the pay drop.Debt £5600 all 0%0

Hi, thats exactly what im doing! im starting new job in a couple of weeks which is paid well enough but is part time hours so is a cut! I am making up my income by doing extra bits on the side, like first tracking www.firstmovies.com/firsttracking and AQA www.issuebits.com.
I also plan to try get a couple of evenings/weekends in a local bar (fingers crossed)! for me this is worth it as the new job is an area i really want to get into and has a lot of prospects for the area! you just have to weight it up, I decided the years experience is worth the effort! PM if you want any more info on side jobs mentioned!

I have done the calulations and with the tax credits I can survive at a push but my intention is as soon as I get in to it start working towards the next level of the job0 -
Is there any chance of negotiating a bigger wage in this new job? What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about? :eek:Official "Bring back Mark and Lard NOW! or else (please)" Member 160

I'm about to do the same. Go for it if you afford it. Gotta think longtermLightbulb moment: June 2006:shocked:

I agree, go for it! If the benefits are good , it may be worth it! And then your opportunites will kick in in a year. For example, my cousin gets a lot less than I do, but her company gives her amongst other things, free private healthcare, free gym membership including monthly massages!0

I made the decision last year to get out of a pressure filled sales job, and take a paycut of at least 2.5k (basic, but I could earn up to another 1.5k in bonus) to work in a school, it means that while I study for my degree to eventually get into teaching, I am working within a school, learning all sorts of stuff I wouldn't necessary get through teacher training, it means I get a final salary scheme pension, and as I plan to get into teaching this will follow me right through, and it also means I get all the school holidays, which is brilliant!! But more to the point I am happy, much happier than I have been in any job, I never come home moody, I'm home 2 hours earlier than I ever was, and I have a great feeling of job satisfaction (even when the kids have been horrors and I've had to threaten time out 100 times) it got to the point in my old job where I dreaded going in, I didn't want to climb any further up the ladder, all the enthusiasm I had when I started had been sapped dry.
The point I am trying to make, is yes I am in debt, but actually I have less debt now than I did a year ago, I am still paying it off at the same rate, but you will make ends meet even with a pay cut, if the prospects are better, and its a job you will enjoy, then go for it, the long term gain will far outweigh the short term loss.
Good Luck!!

If you can survive on the starting wage, I'd definitely advise doing it. I did a similar thing - started a new job on a lower wage ( was probabtionary wage of just under 10k) and 18 months later I earn more than double that in salary and bonuses, plus I *love* my job
I think it's worth the risk. Good luck whatever you decide  DFW Nerd #104 I :heartpuls my Kitten
