Hi Folks,
I have a laptop which totally refused to work, I posted earlier and was advised to boot from disc with ubuntu, so that I can access the system to clean up the problems.
I have succesfully booted the system with ubuntu but now have no idea how to access the drives to clean it up. Nothing on the laptop is sacred and therefore can all be wiped, just need to know how to do it.
Please Help

Hi
When you're running from the Ubuntu Live CD..
If you want to access your hard drive look in 'Places' at the top.
If you just want to wipe and reformat your hard drive use 'Gnome Partition Manager'.
That will be in
System > Admin
or
System > PreferencesNever interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
as stated everything that was on the computer will be under places, depending on what was wrong with your system in the first place if it is just a virus you can get a 'windows antivirus' in ubuntu so can download that and run it over you hard drive https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AntivirusDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Thanks for the help guys, everything looks good.
I have now installed ubuntu and freed up all the space on the disc. The problem now is that I cannot connect to internet. Not sure if the drivers for wireless card have been deleted, and if so how can i tell which card it is so that I can get the drivers???
Also will the laptop find the network automatically or will I have to set it up manually???
ThanksDon't ask me, Im SKINT0 -
You should be able to find out the make and model/chipset of the card simply by opening a terminal session and typing "lspci", which should list all of the PCI devices.
You'll see a line that looks something like:
02:07.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)
except of course it will be a wireless rather than a wired one in that example.
Once you know that you can then search for a how-to on how to configure it. If it's a common wireless chipset, the drivers are probably already in the kernel, but if not it's no big deal - most of the how-to's literally go through the process line-by-line, so you can just cut and paste the commands into a terminal prompt.0 -
Cant help directly as I've forgotten a lot about ubuntu having not been using it for the last 12 months, but check out www.ubuntuforums.orgProud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0

Wot he said ^^^^^^^^^^^^
Laptops can be slightly problematic and occasionally need specific fixes - especially if the problem lies with the wireless connection. My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).
For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com0
