how to back up iTunes and mac mail?

I have a macbook pro c 2007 running Tiger OS X 10.4.11. I want to upgrade to snow leopard but keep my iLife original software.

I have backed up most of my hdd to an external hdd but am battling with iTunes. What's the best way to do it please? (please keep it simple, am not clued up :D).

I also have no idea how to back up my emails that I want to keep, from folders, inbox and sent items in my mac mail.

Please can anyone help. Many thanks.

If you are intending to keep your iLife software, simply select the "upgrade" installation option when you install Snow Leopard - not need to restore files from backup if you do this. If you do a "clean" install, you will lose the iLife package. (There's a third option too I think, but I can't remember off the top of my head).

I'm assuming you are going the route of "erase and install"; you will need to reinstall the iLife package afterwards.

To back up iTunes library, consolidate and copy the iTunes folder.
To back up Mail (and some things like bookmarks), follow this.

Time Machine made this so much easier, but shame you don't have this on 10.4.

Apple store only offered me the option of a clean install. My mate in Oslo told me they 'could' do me an install/upgrade to SL keeping all my settings but they won't. In fact, they insist I do it although they will let me sit in the store on a weekday and call them over if I have problems.
So I am backing everything up and will have to reinstall.
Sorry to be a nuisance, but will post again if I still have problems. Thanks Scrilla

Btw once I have SL, I can have Time Machine. Is this free? Presume once reinstalled, I can back up all my existing photos, music and docs to Time Machine next time around. Is it 100% reliable as well as my photos are irreplaceable.

Is there a reason why the store is installing it for you? It's just as easy for you to install from the DVD yourself and to select the upgrade option.

Time machine comes with 10.6. Time Machine is good, but I would still recommend making a DVD of your photos for safe keeping.
