Help with notice period - want to quit????

Hi all, I have just given notice to quit on the property I'm in. I gave written notice on 27th March with a view to leaving on 27th April as I pay my rent 28th - 27th every month.
I originally had a fixed period of 6 months from 19th Dec 2008, I paid 6 weeks in my first payment to get the monthly payments coming out after my pay cheque went in and have paid on 28th of the month ever since.
The rental company have accepted my notice to quit but say I am tied in until the 19th May as I originally took the property on 19th (a year and 3 months ago). I thought it was one month's payment period and now I'm going to have to pay for 2 properties as I pay for my new place from 27th April
. Is there anything I can do?
Cheers
Sam

No it is the rental period and not when you pay your rent that matters. This is a text book example of why all the people who "simplify", usually through ignorance, and say that notice lines up with rental payments are just plain wrong.
The agents are correct, if a little inflexible, that your notice period runs until May, although the last day of your tenancy will actually be the 18th May.0
