Loo cistern takes ages to fill...

My loo cistern takes about 5 minutes to fill up. This wouldn't be a problem form me since I live alone, but when I have guests and after a few drinks we all get the urge, it can become a bit of a nuisance.

Can anyone explain to me how to increase the flow? I'll be damned if I'm going to call a plumber just for that!

  • Could be a problem with the ballcock/valve.
Start by turning off the water to the toilet. Assuming the valve is plastic you should be able to take it apart by hand, give it a clean, replace the little black diaphram (20p from a plumbers merchant), put it back together and adjust the water level using the screw attached to the arm.

    Good luck!!!

I have already adjusted the water level to the minimum necessary for a reasonable flush. It's just that the flow is a very tiny trickle. However I will try what you have suggested with regard to the valve. :)

    2 possabilities

1st, you could have grit in the valve seating.

2nd, if it has always been slow to fill, it could have the wrong type of seating fitted, for high pressure(mains feed) it will be white one.
If it is tank feed it should have a low pressure seating, Red in colour.
A thankyou is payment enough .

    Thanks folks!

I've just had a look and there's a white thingy that looks made for turning, next to the water inlet. I fiddled with it, afraid I might do something terrible, but the water flow increased... so simple really when you just look at it..:j
