do decision makers get personal details or did ours just not read it properly

when we applied for dla for our daughter aged 14 months old. we had wrote in all about a nasal gastric tube that we would have to place almost daily, also about having to check it was in the place and feed her program her feeding pump etc.

we got a letter giving her low rate care, the reason. apparently at 14 she should be able to sort her own pump.

when i rang they asked me if i was sure she wasnt 14.

they did i must say sort this out and relooked at her claim sorting it out but it made me wonder if they only get the care pages and not the information.

  • I have no idea whether they get the full details or just the care pages, but I would imagine that they would have to get the age of the child, otherwise how can they make any decisions based on comparisons of care with children of the same age? i think you have just been unlucky and somebody has misread the age of your daughter.

I was asked once, though, by the DLA helpline, when would my son be cured of Down's syndrome

I think many people have the problem with them not reading what we've wrote.

    You what?!

I was once told that being visually impaired and having a mild balance problems doesn't affect one's ability to walk down a flight of stairs. Or am I the only one who uses my eyes to look where I'm going? Their argument being "you don't receive HRM".

I've never been asked when I'll be cured of Nystagmus; but have been told I should've "adapted by now". Adapted to what? Burning myself cooking?

They are not, but the DM's do have medical guides that they can refer to. However, whilst the telephone staff do have access to the guides, they do not always have time to refer to them ... and really should not have been asking questions like the one they asked kingfisherblue! :o

A lil insensitive but I can see why they questionned it as some can do things no problem. My mum being one yet she lies on forms to get her DLA:mad:

Can't believe Kingfisher was asked when her son would be cured of Down Syndrome:eek: I'd have wanted to slap the person asking!

The decision maker has the opportunity to have sight of all the information but in my experience they don't always read it. I remember sending in medical evidence, as the helpline were saying it hadn't been received I insisted on speaking to the section who found my file with the evidence I had sent in. I remember the person on the section saying she would point out that this information was in the file to the DM so they would 'actually read it' as she put it - not exactly confidence inspiring.

I know that the DMs are not medically trained, but I thought everyone knew that DS was a lifelong condition. If they had asked me when one of his other conditions would be cured, I could understand it, as he has several rare conditions in addition to DS and I hadn't heard of any of them until my son was born.
