Heres another tip for the comet/currys stores.

When we bought our TV from comet we didnt want to pay the £20 delivery (or whatever it was) and told the woman this. We said want the TV but we'll pick it up. The woman then offered us delivery for about £10 which we refused aswell, she then offered it us for £1 so we agreed. Obviously this will only work if you can possibly pick it up just in case it back fires. She then told us that comet prefer to have large things delivered as its easier for them and so they would prefer to give you a discounted delivery rather than you collect from them.

In the end the TV broke 30 days after so it went back, but the above is something to bare in mind.
  • Do any of you MSEs watch "Don't get done, get Dom"? Its been on at 2.30am on bbc for the past few nights (not sure how long the series has been going). It is basically a super MSE giving advice on how to haggle anywhere for anything! Yesterday he stopped a random woman buying a pram for £325 and told her to go get a coffee. Within an hour he came back with the pram for £199 including the car seat (£100), umbrella thing and accesories! He also trained someone who was having trouble with haggling to buy a caravan at £3500 off, free £300 caravan kit, free cooker and 3 tins baked beans. Basically the show gives advice on whats good and whats bad for haggling! Also alot of info on consumer rights!
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!

take the insurance/warranty, but only if they offer to drop the price and give you a discount. Then cancel the insurance in the 14 day cooling off period for a refund.
I'd be wary of this approach as I tried it when purchasing a TV from Currys a number of years ago. On returning to get the refund on the insurance/warranty they sussed me and advised the discount would have to come off the deal too!
  • I recently bought a 1500 sheets plasma tv from Currys. I had been waiting for the hd version to come out and knew exactly what I was looking for when I went to the store. Before hand I had already found an online retailer selling it for £150 less than Currys. The salesman initially advised that they couldn't do any discount (unless I took the extended warranty, which I most definately did not want). I simply asked if he could check with the Manager to see if there was any leeway as I'd purchased a number of items from Currys over the years and wished to buy direct from them again. He brought over the assistant Manager who was happy to meet me halfway and discounted the tv by £75 - result! As you know exactly what you are looking for I would recommended following the same approach. Good luck!

Or take it on Easipay ( 10 Direct Debits and £10 deposit ) then cancel the direct debit with your bank.
