IMG_0065.jpg It's the plant on the right. The other one is a tomato. I suspect it's either a melon or courgette / marrow as there were seeds in the copmpost I used.
If it's a melon is it likey to survive to maturity? Its growing outside and we're in Yorkshire.
Sorry the picture is huge don't know how to make it smaller.
Thanks,

It looks like a type of squash, couldn't tell you which type. But let it mature and have a look.

    Looks like courgette to me.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Lovely! I'm sure it's a courgette. We've been getting loads and they all start out with flowers just like that. There's a courgette thread. I'll try to find it for you.

I think it's a courgette but it could also be a squash or a melon or a marrow...I have all 3 and they all look pretty much the same, as ,of course do outdoor cucumbers.I it is a courgette you could make the courgette soup that i am making with the glut I have . I got it off an earlier thread here when I appealed for recipes.

Could be a cucumber, our cucs look like that.

Either way, if the flower is on the end of the fruit, leave it. If the flower is on it's own, pick it off and chuck it. Otherwise it'll cross-pollinate and the fruit will be bitter.

will it have both kinds on the same plant? Some flowers have fruit on the end but not others yet.

Some are all-female varieties, some are mixed male and female.

If you can't see fruit before the flower starts to form, it's male and should be removed.

Hmmmmm - it's male and should be removed - I think we should apply this to husbands as well :rotfl:
