Four year old failed vision test??

Hiya,
My three year old got glasses about 6weeks ago, I knew there was something up as he as to go very close to read things. I took him to my own optician and he agreed that he needed glasses, BUT we got the glasses the optician recommended and DS would not wear them. I was there at the test and I could not see how he could accurately have performed the test and it felt a little haphazard. So I went to see my health visitor and she referred us to the community opticians. They were used to dealing with under 5s on a daily basis and I was also there for that eye test and it was much more age appropriate.
It turns out his eyesight is much poorer than my own optician had rated it. he glasses DS got from the community optician are great- he wears them religiously and says that he can see brilliantly with them
His little playgroup friends think he is cool too. He said to me last week 'mummy I am SOOOOO handsome with my glasses' It made me laugh.
Anyway, the moral of my story is to get a second opinion, I knew DS had eyesight problems as I too had them when I was his age.

Having an appointment at a proper optician rather than a mickey mouse test done by untrained school nurses in a room with bright lights and lots of distractions is the first step!!
Mine have been going to the proper optician since they are about 3.5 and the opticians are fabulous with them. I have 3 children who wear glasses and no, it isn't what you would choose for them but if they need them, they get them.
The fact she 'failed' a school eye test does not mean she needs glasses as all.. it means she needs to have a proper eye test to put your mind at ease.
I refused to allow my children to have the eye test at school because it was done by the school nurse and something as important as vision needs to be checked by someone who knows what they are doing. The school nurse got most stroppy when I said I take my children to the optician routinely therefore to have an eye test done by them was not only a waste of my time but theirs as well.
If only finding a dentist was as easy as finding an optician!
I was going to say something along similar lines. Testing a 4 YOs vision is tricky enough for us Opticians at times, let alone a nurse with little training and understanding of what principles are involved. Get another test for peace of mind an don't press the panic button yet!Beware the character seeking personal gain masquerading as a moral crusader.

Don't feel guilty.
We didn't twig our son had poor eyesight and needed glasses until he was nearly 12! If the kid grows up with it, they assume it's normal and that's what everyone sees. So they don't say anything.
We and the school didn't notice anything (although he was dyslexic, so had issues anyway that might have made it harder to notice the eyesight).
It was only when his dad was out bowling with him, and realised he couldn't read the score board, that we knew there was a problem.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
Dont feel bad everyone!! I got glasses aged 6 and I am SEVERELY short sighted - opticians said they didnt know how Id been managing at school etc, my Mum felt awful!! I used to get told off for not singing in assembley - I couldnt read the OHT! :rotfl: but I didnt think to tell anyone, I thought it was normal! When I got my glasses I was  bloody hell!0
