Advice for clay soil improving
Comments
-
Organic mater is a great suggestion for improving the soil, but as 2 others have mentioned, sharp sand makes a big difference too.
Clay particles, if examined at a microscopic level, are flat and stick together hard. Bakes hard /dry in summer, which is pretty horrid for the roots of plants and has zero drainage in winter leading to waterlogging and muddy conditions.
Sharp sand, however, is the complete opposite. The particles are much more sphere like and extremely free draining, so by combining the 2 (clay with sharp sand) you get soil which is much more aerated, easier to dig and much easier for worms to pass through and utilise the organic matter that you're adding.
So I would definitely recommend adding a few bags of sharp sand to the soil as well.
Good luck
