Childrens money and housing benefit

My children are due to come into some money in the form of savings accounts of which i will most likely be made a signatory.
does anyone know if this will count towards my savings in regards to my housing benefit?
Many thanks.

Depends how much it is if its over £16000 then i would think it does as it states on the Directgov website

I think it may be a little more tricky as the OP will be a signatory also.

  • it will be in their names but i will have control.
i have just been reading another thread '
advice re benefits for JSA. Is childrens income counted'.
it answered most of my questions. it is just frustrating as i am self employed and when i get any extra money we save it to hopefully put down on a house and get off benefits but now i will have to stop claiming or spend the kids money!! (on the house)

Your case is slightly different to the other thread, you need to seek advice from the CAB if you can.

What are the circumtances for the children "to come into some money".

I am struggling to understand how children would come into money bypassing the parent.

    ?

the most obvious would be a bequest from a grandparent or other family/friend?

    Perhaps.

But why to the children and not to the mother? The mother obv needs financial help as she is asking the state for it, why not this money?

Without more information it sounds a little fishy.

  • the money is due to be passed down in a will, the details of which are not to clear at the moment but the fact is that we are all recieving money and combined it will put us over or very near the £16000 limit.
i am going to try to get it put in a trust, that should help.
