Surely working from home increases your peak rate usage and makes E7 less effective?

I did say 'or may not'. You're in danger of making too many assumptions. Sometimes we are out during the day, often asleep (I chose my name for a reason!), I run an electrically heated greenhouse - and so on.

The point of my comment was just to put a paw on the scales, as it were. You can't assume anything about people's consumption - you need to do the maths. It is not axiomatic that E7 only works for people with storage radiators. Each individual needs to do the sums carefully to find out - even if the likelihood is that they will be better off on a standard tariff.

I don't think I'm making too many assumptions. But you said you worked from home, therefore a reasonable assumption is that you are spending more heating and lighting the property than someone who is out 8 or 10 hours 5 days a week.
Agreed, if you sleep all day and work at night then E7 is going to be ideal.
I didn't say that E7 only works with storage heaters, I said that it only works if you can put upwards of 20% of your consumption on it. The use of storage heaters would probably be the biggest factor for most households in getting to that target.
As you say, people have to look at their bills and then the decision should not be difficult.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Here are the E7 costs (Inc VAT) of for a Scottish Power customer based in the Eastern Region Standard no standing charge tariff and opt to pay quarterly on receipt of bill.

    First 225kWh per qtr: 18.300p
    Remainder of normal units: 12.151p
    Off peak units: 6.363p

And for the equivalent single rate:

    First 225kWh per qtr: 18.441p
    Remainder of normal units: 12.751p

What is the maximum off-peak usage that can be used to ensure the single rate will be the cheaper option?

The cheaper option would be to ditch Scottish Power quick!

Why? Who would you propose as a supplier for someone living in the Eastern Region wishing to pay on receipt of bill and using approximately 3500kWh per year ???
