  • It is possible. If DVDFab won't work then try DVDDecrypter www.dvddecrypter.org .

How much disk space do you have free?

It varies depending on when I get rid of ripped movies, but usually between 2 & 4GB.

Hope this doesn't sound like I'm being thick but I've clicked on this link but am not sure what I should be downloading & how. Please can you clarify.
  • Sorry, I forgot that since the software isn't being updated (which is a pity) it's no longer on that website!

It can be downloaded from here, http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/ and there's other dvd related software there too.

    Thanks.
    Memory is 512 RAM.

Although there is enough disk space, available space is critically low. Is it possible that it is struggling to find space for such a large file as the hard disk has become very fragmented and maybe the speed would improve if I did some kind of reorg ... if that's possible?
Memory is definitely an issue if you are trying to rip a DVD with just 512MB. Although you might be limited by the age of you machine you really need to increase this to at least 1GB and preferably more.

You will need more than 4GB hard drive space if you are looking to rip DVD's using something like DVDShrink where the standard size dsics are ripped to (in order to fit a single layer DVD) is 4.36GB IIRC. As previously suggested I would install an additional hard drive (a Seagate "Plug 'n Play" 500GB external drive was £49.97 in Tescos last week).
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

I use to use AnyDVD and CloneDVD a few years back. Great software and is updated all the time and was one of the highly rated ones on various specialist CD/DVD forums.

Although when I purchased they were doing free updates for life, I see they now do subscription based updates, which is a shame.

    Thanks all for your suggestions/advice.

I've so far installed MagicDVDRipper and this has drastically cut down times compared to Wondershare's 5-6 hours (although it should be said that it is producing files of half the size). To rip a 90-minute movie takes around 45 mins on my daughter's laptop, 90 mins on my PC when ripping to the low-on-free-space C-drive and 60 mins when ripping to an external hard drive, so this seems to back up much of what's been said re memory & available disk space.

You figures are interesting as Wondershare movies rip to approx 1GB & MagicDVDRipper to around 0.45Gb, much lower than the figures you quote. I guess that this suggests that for the settings that I'm using, quality is being compromised somewhat. However, I'm only interested in watching them on my iPod and the quality of those ripped so far is plenty sufficient.

I'll try the other Rippers suggested here before decidiing which to go with, but I don't think I'll be using Wondershare again. I suppose the latest version should be tried on a PC with plenty of space and decent memory to ascertain run times and also whether the technical issues with the earlier versions have been overcome. But as things stand, my advice to anyone would be to give it a wide berth.
