Now that's not what I've read... somewhere in one of the books (possibly Rabbits for Dummies), they suggested putting hay in the litter tray to encourage them to go there. Also, Amy suggested it too:

Lots of bunny like to munch on hay whilst they are doing their business so they may prefer a pile in their litter tray instead of a hayrack.

Also, my OH popped hay in the igloo yesterday which is why we think they started going in there too. We cleared it out today and didn't put hay in there, but they're still using it, so we've bought a plastic sheet to put under it and will put litter pellets in it too if they're intent in going in there. I don't want to upset them as they've only been home 30 hours now!

Here's a pic for those who asked:

(Marmite is black, and Scrumpy is the chinchilla)

They're going to get themselves into plenty of mischief, I know.. I can tell this as after Marmite's escapee attempt earlier, Scrumpy managed to get himself wedged in the hay ball and squeezed his way through it. Bless, he looked at it afterwards as if to say "why the hell did it eat me like that?!"

Rabbits do go toilet in areas with hay, it's very natural to them. They like to go toilet and eat at the same time. Generally for a litter tray have some kind of absorbant material underneath with hay on top. This stops the hay sitting in wee.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

I'm thinking of getting a mini-lop as a house bunny - just a quick question - does rabbit wee come out of carpets easily enough!?

    probably not!!!!

If I havent noticed it on the tiles it can leave a mark even after cleaning.

He has done them on the carpet upstairs before now and I used 1001 which left a mark rather than the wee!!! its cream carpet.

very much love bunnies being house bunnies though :)

My friend has a question on bunnies:

Do male bunnies have nipples. On checking my own male he hasnt. (she is now doubting the sex of he/she)

we have found conflicting information so I thought if I asked you lot you may know.

Nope, don't think my two boys have either... but they're still very young so maybe older ones do...? Who knows!

I have a question: does anyone know if any pet stores online or off stock Dodson and Horrell but don't charge the earth for delivery (ideally free delivery)? I'm struggling to find the stuff my buns' came with to feed them and the changeover food's nearly out... and the Burgess Exel we had bought is far too concentrated for them

Thanks indiegirl for checking your boys LOL.

re the food - sorry no I only use excel for my bun. They do a baby/junior one if thats any better.

what do you mean by too concentrated?? most bunnies are picky so thats why the pellets work better normally.

Hope someone can find the food you are after :D

We've got the Excel junior one but the buns end up with lots of cecotropes if I feed them even half a spoonful per day; it just seems too concentrated and rich for them. They came with Dodson and Horrell so I'm on the lookout for where to buy some...

I got my first babby rabbit on saturday (11 week old lion head) and I'm slowly reading through the thread but I had some urgent questions.
I really want to make sure i start well so here goes
is there a definitive list of veggies they can eat,
I've googled till the cows come home and I'm getting confused (e.g. they all say carrots but some say carrots are sweet so we should only give him a bit) - concerned I'm not giving him enough veg, the lady we got him from said no greens!?!? but carrots and sweetcorn and peppers (although google says to only give him green peppers anyone know why, whats wrong with the other colours)
he does have loads of hay and some pellets (the pellets on the pack say for 16 weeks plus, are we feeding him the wrong ones? It's what the lady gave us)
I'd heard that rabbits don't wee often but ours does, at least 3/4 times a day - is this something to worry about? plus is 100 bits of poo a day too much (he really isn't far off that) - are we feeding him too much?

Hey reehsetin, good luck with your little bundle - is he a house bunny? I have a mini dwarf lop who does an incredible amount of poo's (I stopped counting at 150 in one day!) and as for the wee's - it might be some spraying (it's a boy thing) in with normal wee - my little bun has managed to spray up in the air along the back on the sofa whilst sitting before? Are they big puddles or just little drops?

They shouldn't have any veg or fruit until they are 12 weeks old, and then only introduce them to one kind a week to make sure it doesn't upset their tummy. Mine loves red cabbage, (not white though?) celery, peppers, carrot tops (these are the best bits for them, with the leaves), strawberries (a rare treat) cucumber, be careful not to give them too much water based food though (i.e. lettuce).

They will eat anything put in front of them so be careful - mine loves bread, poppadums, pastry - he begs under the dinner table for it!

Don't forget to have his jabs done, myxi first then VHD, very important. Hope some of this helps!
