keeping pc healthy ?

Hi
I know that my pc will auto check for updates & then lets me choose from the unimportant ones ( i have one at the moment sitting there which i cannot decide on whether to download it or not called silverlight ) is this important ?

I also wanted to know do i have to visit the Dell web site to update drivers ? is there a tool i can use which would check my pc for any update drivers i may need ?
a while back i think i had removed an important driver and went on the Dell website, i was presented with a huge list off drivers and i chose most off them as i wasnt sure what i needed.
what are the most important steps to take in keeping the pc up to date ? iam familiar with all the security etc thanks to ppl on here

thanks
