Food Shopping For 22 month old

Hey guys,

Just wondering what other parents make for their toddlers dinners? My son is 22 months old. We tend to give him ready meals like cottage pie, heinz jars, waffles, fish fingers, chicken goujons etc. Id like him to eat a bit more healthy but lacking inspiration. I often wonder how other parents say its cheaper to cook from scratch?

All thoughts appreciated.

  • I think the trick is to have a good basic healthy store cupboard and for the whole family to eat healthily, then top up with fresh fruit and veg, meat/meats substitutes as and when need/want dictates.

Does he eat fruit, drink milk/soy milk?

So you cook a separate meal for your nearly two-year-old then?
  • Hi

I work FT and DH is SAHD so meals can be a struggle as he isnt keen on cooking. We have been giving the toddler pots 3/4 times a week for lunch but trying to move away from those. Lunch tends to be a sandwhich cheese, cheese spread, peanut butter are his favs. DH has started giving him veggy sticks as they have become a fav too.

Dinner meals are often the same as we have which try to cook myself e.g. home made spag bol (made tin toms and extra veggies), shephards pie, pasta with sauce, fajtas, baked potatoe, homemade pot wedges etc and it does work out cheaper. Great thing is if you cook a larger portion you can freeze some and keep it as handy meals you can zap in the microwave when your stuck.

If Im feeding my son before we eat e.g we are getting takeaway later here are some of the things he has:

hm lentil and carrot soup - made before hand and frozen into portions dead easy to make

Omlette - can chuck in some veggies (microwaved frozen ones a good)

Pitta bread - stuffed with grated cheese and carrot and cooked under grill

    Eggy bread

Jacket potatoe - zapped in microwave and served with grated cheese

    Beans on toast

    Pasta with pesto

hm chicken curry - again usually frozen left overs

    xxxxxxxxxx

When mine were that age, they would eat what we were eating too.

My youngest is 10 months, and hes just had scrambled egg and toast fingers (same as me!) and a yogurt.

What kind of meals do you cook for yourself?

    Home made cottage pie?
    Roast dinner?
    Sausage and Mash?
    Spag bol?
    Chicken casserole?
    Fish, potatoes and veg?
    Pasta and garlic bread?
    Fajitas?

Your little one could eat all of those along with you, infact he should be eating almost everything that you eat ~ I would have assumed he was way past Heinz jars at his age though?

    Thanks for that choccybuttons.
  • Your son can eat anything you eat now. The earlier you statr them on a varied diet, the less fussy they supposedly become. He doesn't need any special jars, whcih will therefore reduce your food bill....just let him have fun exploring what you eat!

I occasionally buy the Hipp toddler meals(not jars, the ones in plastic pots for over a year old) but mostly little one eats exactly what the rest of us do, whether it's pizza or soup or roast or shepherd's pie or sandwiches. She loves fruit thankfully. Her favourite meat is chicken and she sat there and ate a drumstick quite happily yesterday(chewed it straight from the bone). She's 16 months.
