Ipod not charging

I don't know if it's the ipod that's knackered or the charging unit - any way to establish which ? I haven't used the ipod in about nine months, and it's absolutely dead. I assume it needs charging but can't get it to charge - tried different (working) sockets so it's either the charging unit or the ipod itself. How can I work out which it is ?

have you left it on charge?
when very flat it will take a while for the ipod to wake up0 -
imho
I went to the apple site, downloaded itunes, downloaded the software for a restore. Took about two hours and got no-where.
I think it's the hard drive. Went googling on repair places and booked it into one. It's a 40 GB Classic and when they gave options for 'problem' - one fitted the bill exactly.
It goes from the apple logo - to box with ! (meaning problem) & sad face - to charging. Repetitively over and over again. Plus it repetitively makes whirring noises like it's starting something then stops then starts again etc.
Seems to be a hard drive repair. Oh well !!0 -
