Hello there folks,

I am looking to move into a rented 2 bed house with my partner and would like to know if I have allowed enough for utilities etc?

In my budget, I have allowed:

Leccy £50pm
Water £20pm
Gas £30pm
Council Tax £120pm
Food £200pm

Does this seem reasonable?

Many thanks

Shaun

Assuming you are talking about the total bill, rather than just your share of it:

Gas+Electric=Fine, probably will have money left over from what you have allowed
Water=Would up that to £30 pcm
    Council tax=Fine
    Food=Flexible, amount is reasonable

Remember TV licence (£12 pcm), contents insurance, phone line and broadband plus any TV package you might like.
  • I agree on upping the water as the price can vary so much from area to area. In my previous house 5 miles away I was paying £12 a month less than I am now!! Good luck with the new house...and dont forget your TV licence and contents insurance :D

Cheers for that Hughskevi... This is the total bill I am allowing for, we pool both our incomes.

I have allowed for Boradband and TV separately. Was just interested in utilities as the place I am in has this included in the rent, and it has been some years since I have paid all of the bills.

I was a little concerned as all I see is prices rising and rising on all utilities.
  • Hi there,

    I am in a 2 bed house.

It's on Pre-payment gas and electric meters, that I haven't got around to changing yet, as they don't prove that expensive!

    We pay-

Council Tax £120 (band B, includes water)
    Gas £40 p/m winter £10p/m summer
    Electricity £40p/m all year
    TV £12
Insurance £5.15 (Plus more cashback through Quidco than the initial cost of policy!)
Food (for 2) we do one £50 shop p/m then a weekly £15 shop for veg etc.
Phone, TV etc. is all up to you...

Hope that helps, your figures seem fine:)

You can check the council tax banding of any house using www.voa.gov.uk - and then use your council's website to check the charges for that band.
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard

Up here in sunny Scotland with 2 OAPs we are paying £480 per year for water and sewage and we don't have a meter and they won't give us one.

And the rip off tax is £1400.
