If your hard disk dies before you have chance to backup, you may feel like a complete gimp.

No time like the present, shouldn't take long.

If you send it off to HP, assume all your data will go forever. (it shouldn't, but once you send it off, the risk is always there).

  • I'm just going to do it now..

quick question first though.. the external drive I have, came with software "seagate manager" and i followed the prompts at setup, it clicks on & off regularly whilst I'm working, shutting down etc, does this mean that I may already have the back ups I need?

it can do scheduled backups, if you've set them up, have a look at the logs and on the drive and see if it has backed up anything, and what.

Even so, a maxblast image would be prudent.

I don't know that the seagate back up manager has worked.

I'm a little confused as the drive shows files from my pc but the back up log is just a HUGE list of files skipped/ file not supported??

    Can you help please?

    at the end of the huge list it says;

Copied 857 files, 2015486339 bytes. Total files protected: 122826. Unable to backup 7 file(s)

    Backup completed 11 September 2010 21:06:05

its also doing a back up just now

I don't know what you have set it up to backup, and when, it may be doing an incremental schduled backup.

keep it simple, use maxblast and backup the lot.

  • Hi,
I thought I'd update you with the latest on my pc and its wonky hard drive.

I've spoken to HP tech support and agreed last week to have them send out a replacement hard drive, for me to fit, along with recovery disks (I have mine but they offered for free so I thought it seemed like a good idea)
So today I thought I'd do the job and fitted the new hard drive. Booted up and .... same error message!!!!!!!!

Tech guy had said that if that happened, it'd mean fault with the motherboard?

I have to call them tomorrow to see what happens next. :wall:
    Joy oh joy oh joy

(I've taken the new drive out and stuck the old one back in as ctrl alt del, gets me passed the error message and lets me use the pc. I will refit the new drive before I call them though as its a shiny 500gb and mines only a 320gb so I'd prefer that one)
