Quite a few car radios these days have a jack for a direct cable connection from an MP3 player and some can use a USB pen drive directly. Check the manual first. If it can't do either of those things then transmitters as in the link above usually work OK.

My Mazda 6 cd player has packed up and there is no input socket of any kind so I was considering buying this transmitter for my ipod shuffle. On reading I see that it is not on compatible which goes as follows:-

Compatible with Apple iPhone, iPod Touch(all generations), Classic(all generations), 5th Generation iPod Video, 1st-2nd-3rd-4rd-5rd Generation iPod Nano, iPod Photo, iPod Mini, 3rd and 4th Generation iPod.

So I may have to go out and get one of these ipods as well. What I want to know is which of these is the cheapest to get either new or even 2nd hand off ebay. I have not kept up with all these different versions of ipods but am satisified even an ancient one would be enough for my needs as long as works with the transmitter.(Come to think of it, if there was an adapter which could allow me to use my shuffle that would be even better)

That means you can play CDs that have been burnt with MP3 files rather than music CDs so you can get more tracks on one disc
To play from your iPod you either need, as mentioned, an auxilliary socket/radio transmitter, other options are an old-school tape deck and adaptor or, as a varient on the transmitter, to can get a widget that plugs into the antenna socket at the back gving you a wired radio connection (iyswim) that, unlike the transmitter, doesn't need batteries

Good old Apple compatability, once I realised that they had swapped the headphone and data connections around from the gen 4 to the gen 5 nano my mind was made up anyway I digress...

I received one of these free with my Cowon purchase from another retailer
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kensington-Liquid-FM-Plus-Transmitter/dp/B000UVQ1TS/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1270128547&sr=1-5

I am glad it was free, it works but badly, the volume on the player needs to be turned right up, maybe a problem with ipods as I beleive they dont put out much oomph and the quality of the sound out of the car player is not good at all compared to normally radio/mini disc (in my case) playback.
As I have pretty much abandoned mini disc I am now considering a a car stereo that has a jack plug on the front
