Hi,

Can anyone help me?! When we transfer our photos from digital camera to computer the files are massive - is there anyway we can get them to be smaller? Each photo we transfer is well over 1000 KB - normally between 1500 and 1700!

This is because your camera pic quality is set to high resolution

depending on your camera you may be able to change the picture quality (resolution) this will mean the pictures will be anything between a few hundred KB to a Few MB

you will know if you have changed to a lower resolution because you will be able to store more picture on your camera/memory card

I assume you mean after the photos are on the computer?

If so use, a photo editor, such as Irfanview or FastStone Photo Resizer.

If you mean in the camera because they are taking too long to download, then you will have to reduce the resolution which would affect your photo quality.

It is best to save a copy at the resolution that your camera has taken them but you can then easily resize them if you want to e-mail them. If using XP, you can right click on the saved image and Send To, Mail Recipient where you will get the option to resize.

It could depend on whether your camera saves images as RAW (uncompressed) or JPEG (compressed) format. If they are RAW they will be alot bigger but the best quality, if they're JPEG, the camera will reduce the quality and file size. Check your manual to see which type of image your camera is creating.

The higher the number of Megapixels on your camera, the higher the resolution and the higher the file size. To be honest about 1500Kb sounds like it's already compressed unless you have an old camera. My 6MP camera produces images just under 3000Kb compressed in JPEG.

Is the transfer time a major problem? I always like to shoot as high quality as possible then set about making changes in a photo editing program on the PC. This way, you always have a good original to work from, should you need it in the future.
  • The size is due to the settings you've set in your camera.

You should have the option to reduce the picture size and the image quality.
The smaller the size and lower the quality, the smaller the files will be.

Just remember that reducing the settings might lower the quality of the overall image. You'll just have to have a play and find settings that you find acceptable.

Maybe if you posted your current camera settings, someone can advise you on the settings they use to provide a picture that doesn't adversely affect picture and quality without producing large files.

We have no problem transferring the photos as we just put the memory card into the slot on our Epson R300 printer and it transfers really quickly. Its the amount of space that they take up on the computer -well not so much on the computer but more the space they use when we are trying to back them all up! Tried putting some onto my flash drive this morning and couldnt get all the photos on!

You can also do resizing with Picasa.

There are lots of free photo editing programs out there (you may already have one which came with your camera) - it's just a case of finding one you like.

Just a thought- could it be your computer that is having trouble coping?

I never transfer from camera as it is high on battery usage. I use a card reader and then copy the picture files from that and paste into My pictures. Did 78 files totalling 80+Mb the other day in a very short time.
