Paying for removals with a bankers draft?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place. We're moving in 10 days' time and have booked removals etc. They've asked for a banker's draft or cleared payment on the day. I'm reluctant to pay in advance of the move in case there are any problems, but equally don't want to pay £12-odd for a banker's draft. It's for approx £1,500 so not comfortable with having that in cash either. I cannot for the life of me remember what I did last time I moved but I'm wondering what other people do.

TIA

Phone round and get quotes and payment terms from other companies.
Then tell your removal company you'd like them to send you an invoice after you've moved, on receipt of which you'll send them a cheque.

It's not as if they don't know where you're going to be so you can hardly do a runner!

Are they members of a reputable association? Do they have full insurance /liability cover?

Could you not ask for their bank details and do a bank transfer online, most of the time it only takes a few hours to clear? Or pay cash into their bank account on the day you are moving?

Or offer to pay half now and half after either by cheque or bank transfer.

    Very expensive removers!

You could do fast payment through online banking within minutes.

Payment is required upfront as in the event you fail to move. The removal company will still incur the same fixed costs.

I would pay the £12. In the grand scheme of moving house, £12 is nothing and you could waste a lot of time trying to find a cheaper alternative.

PS hope the move goes well, I always find it very stressful

    Thanks for the replies!

Not sure how you could know that the removals are expensive though without any details of the move whatsoever ie distance, size of house etc. ????

Only because I recently moved and got loads of quotes and was moving near London (so expensive) with a lot of stuff. I had 4 quotes that ranged from £850 to £2300 all including packing. So I know that the range is wide for the same level of service.

Anyway I said " expensive" because it is a lot of money; not that you are not getting value for money.
