New tyres - not slipping and sliding everywhere!!!

Remember all those posts in the winter of people complaining about slipping and sliding everywhere when they had new tyres - and what could possibly be wrong? We had all sorts of theories - the tyres need to bed in: it's the release agent from the moulding process: etc.etc.etc.

Had new front tyres yesterday and guess what - I could barely tell the difference.

I wonder if the ambient temperature being 15 degrees and no ice or grease on the roads had something to do with it? :D

If you bought summer tyres, as most people do in this country, then the grip will be a lot worse in the cold.

If you buy winter tyres then in the current temperature they'll be far too soft and tacky and will wear out stupidly quickly, but at lower temperatures you'll have good grip.

Since we're supposed to be due more and more cold winters. I'd recommend that people invest in a second set of wheels with some winter tyres on, and swap them over when it starts getting cold and snowy.

Personally you could just get all season tyres, better wear in summer than winter tyres, however worse in winter but still better than summer tyres.....
  • Not all makes of tyres need to be scrubbed/bedded in, it could be that the make you chose is good from the word go.
Vredestein winter tyres were brilliant from day one, Nokians took 500 miles to bed in then they were fine.
Toyo summer tyres on my car needed to bed in, however a set of General summers fitted to my pick up last weekend are giving superb wet grip from day one.

I think this is one area where there's no hard and fast rule, and it does make me wonder whether those very uselful independent tyre tests may be flawed in some respects, i've never seen in the reports where the tyres were 'scrubbed off' by machine or similar before testing commences, i wonder if results would be different if the various tyres had a thousand miles of use before testing?

A contented mind is the greatest blessing a man can enjoy in this world.
