The first two are updated drivers, which you should definitely install. The third one helps Internet Explorer to display certain websites properly. The fifth and sixth ones are compatibility updates help programs run properly in Windows 7.

Just install all of them, why do you think there are "bad" updates?
Agree that the first 2 are driver updates. But you really don't need to install driver updates unless they are to fix a problem you recognise.

Thanks for all the comments. I've installed them all on this occasion and will probably just install the important ones in future, do abit of research on the others and bear in mind that I can hopefully use the restore points to go back if necessary.

I have only selected to receive updates for Windows at present. Should I tick the box to get updates for other Microsoft products too - or is this not necessary?

Thanks

Absolutely certain it was the update - well documented including on MS's own site.
After update, got a red cross over the sound icon.
Have tried lots of options including reinstalling drivers but no joy.
My problem is I only get access to the laptop occasionally as DD does not live at or near home so am always short of time when I do get it!
Any other ideas would be welcome.:o
Usually if MS are aware of a conflict with any updates, either they or the makers of the sound card will issue a patch to resolve it, perhaps if you include details of the laptop, and Sound card, someone on here may just have a solution for it.

Its recommended to allow MS to install all the "critical updates", thereafter are mainly tweaks. I would not avoid downloading security updates if I was you, as hackers and viruses constantly crack MS open, leaving MS with no option but to re-close them with an update.

Yes, because other Microsoft products need updates just as much as Window does. For example, if you have MS Office installed, you will now not get updates for that.
If you think Microsoft software and it's updates are so dodgy, I'm kind of wondering why you bought a Windows PC?

If I recall desktop search was an XP feature, OP is running Windows 7.
It was an example of a 'bad update' from MS and nothing to do with the OP's OS.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
