Hi wanting to know if anyone can help I have had my turbo changed and have been told after a week I will have to take it back to the garage for the oil and filter to be changed again even though it was done when the turbo was fitted is this correct? If anyone can help I would be very grateful as this is going to cost me even more thanks.

  • Sounds odd to me; unless the last turbo sent debris around the engine, and they're playing it safe by doing a second oil change to pick up any remaining bits?

That's why we have oil filters though.

Ask them why, and post their answer.
  • I'd be interested too, like PPPL i could see the sense in changing the filter but unless they've used some odd oil for cleaning purposes i can't see why the oil should need changing again.

Was the turbo failure put down to gunked up oil ways due to neglect or long life (if only) oil servicing.

The bearings in a turbo are quite small, spin at up to 100000rpm and get heated by exhaust gas up to 600C or more. The swarf they throw off as they bed-in during the first few hours of life is probably too small to be trapped by an oil filter (25microns or so) but you might not want them swimming around in the oil for the next 6000 miles.
(Some engines have secondary oil filters that filter down below 5microns).

Also remember that filters don't have infinite capacity - if you think you might be throwing loads of rubbish into a filter, you change it so that it doesn't get blocked and either start bypassing unfiltered oil, or reducing the engine oil pressure.

It might not be necessary, but it is certainly not a bad idea. My take would be that you've found a conscientious garage with some mechanical sympathy, and you should keep their phone number!

Hi we believe the turbo failure was due to contaminated oil as we have not changed the oil at the recommended time. I was there when he changed the oil and he cleaned it with diesel and then he put some spare clean oil to clean the diesel then let it go and put the good oil in I gave him. I doubt myself it needs changing but he may be playing it safe. Thanks in advance.

defo a good idea, also let the engine idle for 30 seconds or so to let the turbo spin down, before you switch the engine off, as that turbo will still spinning at 10,000 rpm, and the oil flow to the turbo bearings stops when you switch off.
  • Since most people aren't ragging the car while driving down their street and parking up, I've never seen the latter as necessary.

its good advise and was one of the first things i leant about turbos.
i always do it. and it doesn't cause any inconvenience to do so.
