I am decorating some outbuildings, all which have single-glazed windows. Is putty still used to hold in the pane or would filler do??

Use putty, not sure of any other products to be honest but wood filler I think is a definate no no. Bare in mind also that the putty takes days to set properly before you decorate.0 -

Thin down oil based wood primer with white spirit 50/50 and coat the face puttys.Allow to dry for a day ,then coat with 2 undercoats(oil based) and 1 gloss coat.
The good decorators I know do this and don't have a problem of the puttys crinckling up.... Dulux Weathershield is good but don't bother with their primer/basecoat as its now waterbased and pants.........0
