Advice please - strawberries in hanging baskets
I've got four baskets that I've used for flowers for a few years. I'm thinking that strawberries would be a nice thing to try this year as a change.
Where do I start though? Any tips on the best strawbs for baskets and how to care for them? And where to get the plants from? Looking on Ebay just as a starting point, there are tons of different types and I'm kind of lost.
Thanks in advance.

Tomato (a tumbling variety such as tumbling tom or tumbler) would also do well in a hanging basket
http://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/pots-containers/strawberry-basket/ tells you about strawberries in a hanging basket but not varieties I'm afraid
My dobbies garden centre had lots of plants available. other garden centres or even diy stores like B&Q might have them too.
Looking on freecycle or goign down to thelocal allotments to see if anyoen has any runners that they don't want is another option.0 -
Good thinking about the tomatoes too. Thanks.0

I have wild strawberries in my hanging basket, i got them from a kind lady on freecycle. they look really nice and seem to produce as well as other "non wild" strawberries in the veg beds, keeping the birds away from them can be a nightmare at times tho.0

We've got some wild type strawberries in the hanging baskets as well. No variety on them they just said everbearing strawberries ideal for hanging baskets.
They appear to be some kind of wild cross as the flowers are pink and the strawberries are on the smaller size, but lovely and sweet and keep producing for agessssss through the year.
I reckon most varieties would do well as they all normally trail along the ground so would dangle nicely. Just got some more plants from Aldi as my kids love the SB's and these are two earlier varieties we don't already have. Going to nurse them along on a cool windowsill then the GH for a few weeks to avoid the possible frosts/snow that are being predicted next week or so.
