Annual leave question from a mum (Army).

Options
I'm just trying to understand the annual leave process and would really appreciate some information. (No use asking my son, since he hasn't got his head round it yet.)

He had annual leave booked and approved. Something came up at the last minute and he spent the first two days of his leave working. Fair enough - these things happen.
So that's two days leave up the swanee - and he's being told that he'll just have to put up with it because it's the end of the leave year anyway.

That can't be right.

In my job (police) there's compensation for cancellation of leave - you get your days back, plus lower ranks get a dollop of cash. (Not me, though. I just reschedule my lost days.) In my job, I'm also able to carry over a few days into the next leave year - although it's a right bloomin' palaver getting permission and it can be refused.

I'm just not convinced that 'bad luck, mate - you've lost out and you'll have to put up with it' is the right answer to his query.

Can anyone give me the real answer to his question - what can I do to get back those two leave days and carry them over to the next leave year?

This mum would be very grateful fo any replies - thanks for reading!

  • Has your son been to his Admin office to ask a HR Administrator to cancel the two lost days retrospectively on JPA? If I remember rightly from my time in the job, it can be done. I use the same self service system in my current job and it can definitely be cancelled after the fact. He should ask before Wednesday, though, when the leave year ends.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

The 2 days leave can be cancelled even when the dates have passed.

He will have to complete a JPA Form R002 (Cancellation or Amendment to Absence Request) and submit to the local admin office.

You can click on the link above, or you can access it from this link --> http://www.raf.mod.uk/downloads/jpaforms.cfm (its the same form)

Though, these leave cancellation forms are available from his local admin section.

Once this form is complete, he will have his days credited back to his leave balance for the Period of 1 April 09 - 31 Mar 10.

From the leave period of April 09 - Mar 10, he will be able to carry over 15 days annual leave into the next leave period of April 10 - Mar 11. If he has more than 15 days to carry over, he will lose any days over 15. The balance carried forward should be 15 days, no more. This will change in the near future.

If he has more than 15 days to carry, he can apply to not lose them, but its a high up officer, and usually questions will be asked why he could not use 38 days, plus those days carried over in the year if not been OOA.

I regularly put more days leave in than needed, and if i want to return to work early, i can do so and submit this form, which the days are usually credited back within a few days.

    Hope this helps,

    Regards,

    Alias
