Whereabouts to stay in Athens?

Going to Athens for a long weekend in September. Can anyone recommend which are the best areas to get a hotel?
I don't need any help finding a hotel as such, just an idea of where in the city is good to stay.
I read a few reviews on https://www.Tripadvisor.com and found that some good hotels were located in dogdy areas. Can anyone who has been before point me in the right direction. Obviously, I want to be centrally located so its easy to get about and ideally would like some nice restaurants etc. nearby.

here is a useful thread : athens , there has been a few other threads about athens , just do a search
Edit , meant to add , we stayed at kaningos 21 which was near to omonia Sq -definately not the nicest area , but handy for everything inc metro and the hotel was fine"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page."
