Broadband Router

Not sure if this can be done, but I thought I'd give it a shot! I've been given a Linksys Wireless-N Broadband router which works with cable broadband. I can't get cable broadband in my area, so is it possible to configure this so that it can be used with ADSL?

I already have a wireless router which I use for my internet connection, but it's very low spec for wireless and I was wondering if this could be used in any way as an upgrade. Is it possible to connect through my old router, turn the wireless off on it, and use the new router for Wi-Fi? Or is there even some other way it could be done?

There was something in this month's PC Pro magazine (Issue 187, May 2010, p 89), where one of the columnists used the ADSL modem part of an old ADSL router and connected it to a cable router. He got it to work, but it was slightly messy, and you needed to know a bit about networking.

It's only 2/3rd of a page, so you may not want to spend £3.99 for the CD edition of the mag - unfortunately I can't find it on the PCPro website yet...

Depending on the original router, it might be possible to turn on bridging mode, or I could be completely wrong. :)
But I'm guessing that it would still only operate at the lower speed i.e. not N
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • yes you can
turn off the wireless on the "old" router and plug the new router into it
the turn off the DHCP on the "new" router and it should work

Thanks all for your help so far. I've tried turning off the DHCP on the Linksys but it still doesn't allow me access to the internet. While both routers are connected, it also doesn't allow me access to the internet via the old router either, so connecting them essentially disables my internet! what am I doing wrong?

Use the Linksys as a switch rather than a router - I don't know the kit - if it uses a separate cable modem you could be tempted to connect the ADSL router to the WAN side - but for this to work, the linksys must only have LAN connections. Plus make sure that the linksys has a different LAN side IP address to the ADSL router.
