24th March 2010 - Following recent warnings that baby slings can kill infants, Infantino has recalled more than one million of the products in the UK, US and Canada.
At least three children died in these slings in the US in 2009: a 7-week-old, a six day old and a three month old.
Product details
In the UK, Infantino is recalling:
* Infantino SlingRider® & Wendy Bellissimo Sling
* SlingRider - Black Toile - Model 551-710 - UPC 773554517101
* Slingrider -Khaki/Shabby Taupe - Model 551-734
* SlingRider - Black Elegance Model 151-321 - UPC 773554513219
* SlingRider - Charcoal/Monet Model 151-322 - UPC 773554513226
The company's website says the recalled carriers were sold from 2003 to March 2010. If you own one of the SlingRider models listed above, the company says to discontinue using the product immediately.
Consumers who own the recalled products should contact Infantino via the company's web site at www.infantino. com.
Babysling dangers
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned that parents should not try to mend the recalled baby slings. The slings pose two kinds of danger to infants:
* During the first few months of life, infants cannot control their heads because their neck muscles are too weak. They cannot turn their heads when the sling fabric presses against their nose and mouth, rapidly suffocating the baby in just one or two minutes.
* When the sling holds a baby in a curled position with its chin bent toward its chest, the infant's airway is restricted. The child, unable to cry for help, slowly suffocates.
UK industry reaction
Rebecca Ward of the Consortium of UK Sling Retailers and Manufacturers says in a news release: "We are pleased that steps have been taken to ensure that using a baby sling is a safe way to carry your baby. If you are using a `bag style' baby carrier and have concerns, we urge you to contact the manufacturer.
"The majority of baby carriers and slings are still safe to use if they hold baby in proper alignment and fit snugly by design and instruction. These safe designs of sling include shallow pouch-style slings, ring slings, soft carriers and wrap slings."
Advice for parents
If you carry your baby in a bag-style sling, Ward says, "While we are unaware of any fatalities in the UK in these bag style slings at the present time, we would caution against using them in light of the recall".
She advises: "No safety problems have been brought to our attention with any other baby carriers. Make sure you read and follow the manufacturer' s instructions. "
When using a baby sling, the Consortium of UK Sling Retailers and Manufacturers says to follow these basic principles:
Keep your baby close and keep your baby safe. When you are wearing a sling or carrier, don't forget the T.I.C.K.S.
* Tight
* In view at all times
* Close enough to kiss
* Keep chin off the chest
* Supported back

Thanks for bringing this up again. At the end of the day people may not deleberatley look for a particular product just to see if it is on recall. However, those that have not heard of the recall may come across it if its on the first page of threads :-)0
