Problems with a cheque.

I paid in a cheque for £25. It seems the account of the person that wrote the cheque has been closed. I got a letter, returning the cheque to me, and explaining that "we have debited your account number XXXXXXXX with the value of the cheque of £25." Not credited. Debited. So I innocently pay in a cheque, and instead had to pay out that amount. What if the cheque had been for £1000?

!!!!!! IS THIS?

I rang up Natwest and they're looking into it; they said they didn't know why that had happened.

When you paid the cheque in your a/c would have been credited with that amount while it was cleared. Now that the cheque has 'bounced' they've debited the a/c accordingly.
  • Yeah, cheers, I just checked and this is what had happened. Why couldn't they have told me this over the phone? xD

I think banks charge you for doing this too. I would keep an eye on your statement.
