i need to buy a small fridge for my loft conversion, but most small ones seem to only cool between 18-20 degrees lower than ambient, so it we have a hot summer and its 30 up there (which it sometimes is), then whatevers in it is only cooled to 10 degrees,
just wondered what the 'normal' temp for a fridge is?

I set mine at between 3 and 5 degrees.I love my beer to come out of the fridge really cold0

Mine's set to 4C which is the recommended setting by Bosch. In fact it says 'Perishable food should not be stored warmer than +4C'.For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0

Mine's set at 5.0

it sounds like the small fridge uses a device called a peltire to cool it rather than the usual compressor type units larger fridges use. These make the fridges much smaller as there is no need for a compressor and large heat exchangers. Uses 2 fans.. one side to cool the hot side of the peltire and one side to "blow in" the cooler air into the fridge.. Obviously the downside to it is the inability to cool further than 18-20c (and I think that is been generous) than ambiant...
You can get smaller ones with compressors which will do the job correctly - they are about half the size as a "standard" fridge0 -
Thanks to the OP for this post as we have a new fridge freezer and were wondering the same thing.
It has automatic temperatures pre-set but we're wondering if we can/should alter these?
The freezer in particular is set to -22 degrees C which seems excessive to us and wondering if we could save energy by increasing the temp?
Pls does anyone know what a reasonable/safe temp. would be for freezers?
Many thx in advance.0 -
Ours is about -15 and the fridge -4.0

for fridges in food businesses the law requires that food is kept below 8 degrees, with most keeping the temperature at 5 or below to ensure that the core temperature of the food is below 8.
once you start to get higher temperatures you start to get microbial growth.
i don't think there is any temp requirement for freezers as long as it actually freezes! around -18 seems sensible.0 -

Thanks everyone

Yes, I'd rather get a compressor ran one, but as small as possible, any ideas where to look for a very basic, small as possible fridge thats compressor ran?
Thanks again0 -
Possibly look at ones intended for caravans, iirc they make some quite small ones that are proper compressor models for that sort of thing, however probably not cheap.0

How small is small? The 'fridges' you have been looking at are not 'fridges', they are coolers. A proper fridge will have an adjustable thermostat."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0
