Car tax budget savings

Are you rushing to tax your car before the new budget prices kick in?
DON'T BE TOO HASTY !
Depending on the carbon dioxide emissions of your vehicle, it might actually be CHEAPER TO WAIT until the first of April when the new rates come into effect....
The following two tables show what I mean.
NOW
CO2 Emissions up to 100 Group A £0
CO2 Emissions up to 110 Group B £35
CO2 Emissions up to 120 Group C £35
CO2 Emissions up to 130 Group D £120
CO2 Emissions up to 140 Group E £120
APRIL 1ST 2010
CO2 Emissions up to 100 Group A £0
CO2 Emissions up to 110 Group B £20 Saving £15
CO2 Emissions up to 120 Group C £30 Saving £5
CO2 Emissions up to 130 Group D £90 Saving £30
CO2 Emissions up to 140 Group E £110 Saving £10
Group F (up to 150 CO2 emissions has no change to the price) and all other groups show an increase.
To save money therefore, anyone about to tax their car should check their vehicle log book. If their vehicle is registered with a Taxation class of either Petrol Car or Diesel Car then, provided the CO2 emissions figure is LOWER than 140, they should not tax their vehicle until April 1st to take advantage of the decrease in price. Anyone with a CO2 figure HIGHER than 140 should tax their vehicle immediately to avoid the budget increase.
I am aware that in England apparently, you MUST have your vehicle taxed by the first of the month (NOT the case in Northern Ireland) so you need to weigh up the possible benefits of saving money against getting a fine.

How do you know what your emissions are?0

Does it say on your MOT certificate, I'd check but can't find mine :eek:Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0

Find your vehicle registration book (V5C). Look for the Vehicle emissions figure (usually printed somewhere on the left hand side along with Taxation class, vehicle owner details etc). If your taxation class is PLG then tax your vehicle before April 1st as my previous post will not apply and your tax will be increased on this date.0

If you use the following search: taxdisc.direct.gov.uk, click vehicle enquiry and put in your registration number and make of car, it will tell your CO2 emissions figure and cartax cost.

This information is on your V5, thanks OP this is great news and will save me £30, but the banding on your table is wrong, look on direct gov for informationWins so far: 4 tickets to Camalot theme park £76, Lip Balm £2.99, Kerrygold bag £5, 2 night stay in the lake district with free beer :beer:0

What if your car is pre 2001 like mine ( no figure given for emissions). I currently pay £190 per 12 months. Will there be any changes do you know? thanks0

What about cars registered before 1 March 2001?Rates for cars and vans registered before 1 March 2001 are based on engine size. The rates for these cars from April 2010 are shown in the table below:Not over 1549 £125 - Staying the same
Over 1549 £205 - Going up £150 -
However when you renew your tax it takes it from the last time your disc expired unless you have sorned it - I tried this and was still charged the new rate in April even though I renewed in March.
Nice thought OP and I hope it works for someone, but I know the PO had already updated the systems AND even though my reminder was wrong they still increased it to the correct rate.:(Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0 -
Great post, it's nice to know that I'll be saving money. One problem though is some of the figures for the C02 are not accurate, upon looking at this issue, they are:
APRIL 1ST 2010
CO2 Emissions up to 100 Group A £0
CO2 Emissions up to 110 Group B £20
CO2 Emissions up to 120 Group C £30
CO2 Emissions up to 130 Group D £90
CO2 Emissions up to 140 Group E £110
CO2 Emissions up to 150 Group F £125
CO2 Emissions up to 165 Group G £155
CO2 Emissions up to 175 Group H £180
CO2 Emissions up to 185 Group I £200
CO2 Emissions up to 200 Group J £235
CO2 Emissions up to 225 Group K £245
CO2 Emissions up to 255 Group L £425
CO2 Emissions up to 256+ Group M £435
Also, new cars registered with tax bands B-D will pay no road tax for the first year
