I have not been comping for a while, but have won well over the years. I do not tick the boxes.

There's a thread on Loquax about this. A couple of people have said they worked for companies who weeded out entries of those who were not existing or prospective customers

I'd still rather not risk all the aggro of phone calls and junk through my letterbox

I do wonder if these competitions are regulated. It must be a breech of the terms and conditions to be so selective.

I have always opted out of mailings/brochures etc but have recently started opting in now with my hotmail address. It's full of spam and !!!!!! anyway and you can always unsubscribe.

It would be interesting if we all started winning prizes after opting in. lol

This one takes a bit of avoiding.

If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Actually, it's not as bad as it appears - they'll only send you about an email a month. Nothing from their partners/third-parties like some others do. G
• Yeh I'd like to know that too as I never tick the yes option yet I've had quite a good success with comps.

Sorry it took some time to reply. Basically, if you're giving away a car/holiday/whatever, human nature says you're not going to give it to someone who isn't even interested in your company enough to get a few emails. Yes it's not legal. Yes it's discrimanatory. But how're you gonna find out and what're you gonna do about it? One day I'll leave the marketing industry and hopefully my scruples will eventually grow back!

I don't always tick the boxes, only for high ticket prizes.

I run a web site, and run a lot of competitions - I get given stuff by advertisers to 'give away', but they want access to my mailing lists.

Usually, I select the prizes at random (truly, honestly random) then I look at who wanted to subscribe / who didn't.

I can't say everyone does that, but I, as a smaller site, try to be as honest as possible - a lot of my users are friendly with each other, and if they talked to each other and figured out that there was something shady going on it would be bad for my reputation. I'm guessing most smaller companies will think the same way, which will reduce the urge to do anything dubious :)

So the general feeling is to tick the yes option? I've always ticked the no option and I think everyone on here could say I've always been successful with comps. I am going to try ticking the yes option in future and see if it makes any difference.

• I won a dvd recorder from the Paramount Channel and I only enter competitions which give you the option to decline marketing communications. And I've never heard a sausage from Paramount Channel bless em.
