Hello
I am hoping someone has a good idea and can help me to deside.:o

I had an accident (not in my car) and not driving my car. the Car tax is to expired end of March so not sure if is best to declare SORN and pay the tax in 2 months time when I am fit to drive again or pay the TAX now and save on the increase from April
I currently need to pay £175 but it will be £200 from April onwards

Just looking for any thoughs that I may has missed :A
So far I think I will declare it SORN.
Thank you all

Declare SORN as long as the vehicle is off road for the period of non use.

But from what you say it's not your car? Is it your decision; I'm slightly confused.

Anyway if you tax it at £200/annum them that = £16.67/month or £33 for two months. So saving you £8.

But remember tax rates normally rise in April so if it is normally taxed in March it might cost more in the long run if you keep the car a couple of years.

Sounds like the OP was injured in somebody elses car, but cannot now drive his / her own car.

Ah yes I got it now. I just assumed car accident....:o

Anyway advice still stands if VED due 1st of April or after then declare SORN

Car Tax expires 31st of March to pay £175. After April/10 it will be £200 to tax .....but, once declared SORN how do you tax it again? Sould I be still able to pay £175?

you just retax it either at Post Office using logbook (V5C) insurance and MOT or online/by phone. It will cost the rate at the time of taxing, so £200.

Assuming the calculation of a saving of £8 above is correct, I'd just tax it now as tax always goes up in April, so the following year it's going to end up costing you at least a tenner more.

The only exception to this is if you anticipate selling or scrapping the car before the tax is up for renewal again. In this case the £8 saving will be worth it, and an extra 2 months tax on the car may make it easier to sell.
