Another computer probem.

So today I started up my laptop and the screen went light blue and would not let me do anything so I had o switch it off with the power button. I switchwd it back on again and was met by a scan saying something about scanning the disk for consistency.

I looked it up online and people said it means that the disk drive is on its way out. Thing is I just got this computer back at the start of the month and it was reset and repaired.

Now I am out of warranty but this computer has been sent away twice now after I got blue screen and my warranty ran out this month. Considering this computer has a history of problems, am I entitled to help from Toshiba?

  • Last time I rang Toshiba, their helpline were worse than useless. I'd be tempted to give it a go and then post back what happens on here. I expect they will hide behind the fact that your warranty has run out.

One thing though - BACK UP EVERYTHING!!!!! If your HDD is on its way out, you don't want to lose everything.

Back up to DVD, flash drive or external hard drive. You should be doing that anyway, not just when you have already got a problem,

    What OS are you using?

If you did not shutdown properly then your laptop will do a disc scan, it doesn't necessarily mean your hard drive is on it's way out.

BSOD could mean either a hardware or software problem, you will need to give further info to detemine which.

You will have a DVD drive in your laptop, just use the DVD burning software built into Vista to make a back up, the same way you would burn any DVD.
But DVD is not really the best way, an external USB hard drive is a better method.

Checking the disk for consistency is not sign the the disk is faulty, nor is finding file-system errors. Finding bad sectors is a sign of a faulty disk.

Most (all?) drive manufacturers provide test programs for their hard drives.
