  • If you think about it, channel 5 have five.tv as their web address. You should be ok to use it, but what do you want it for? If it's business, I'd be tempted to look for a different name (use "-" in the name or "uk" at the end or something) that you can register with a .com or .co.uk. Examples - fred-bloggs.co.uk or fredbloggsuk.com

The reason I say this is that if I was looking to buy something off the internet, I would shy away from .at or other non-uk/generic address as I would expect the sales laws to be different and wouldn't want the hastle of posting faulty goods back to a non-uk firm. I wouldn't even look at the website to check where their registered office was.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

It varies from domain to domain, each has their own rules on ownership.

Generally these rules are not actually checked, but some are stricter than others ... eg ltd.uk you need to a limited registerd company in the uk, .eu can only legally be registerd to a eu person / company.

!!!! you actually need to give a passport number and russia (.ru) is thinking of doing the same

Others like Tuvula (.tv) just sell their domains to anyone to generate money
