How long do Paypal e-cheques take to clear?

I had someone pay on 20th July, on Paypal it says :-
Total Amount:
£6.00 GBP
Fee Amount:
-£0.40 GBP
Net Amount:
£5.60 GBP
Date:
20 Jul. 2006
Time:
10:20:19 PDT
Status:
Uncleared(Expected Clearing Date: 31 Jul. 2006)
I emailed buyer to say item won't be posted until this clears & sent a copy of the above but stated it could be after that date.
I have just checked & it's still saying uncleared, buyer emailed earlier asking if I have posted today.
I've said no as it is still showing as uncleared, apparently buyer has checked with Paypal who have told them it as defintely cleared & I should send the item.
I'm not sending until either Paypal contact me to say this as cleared or it shows as cleared on my Paypal account.
Any ideas how long this will be? Or is it a case of how long's a piece of string?

e-cheques take forever to clear. Some can take up to a few weeks. Definately don't post the item to the buyer until the payment is showing cleared in your PayPal account. Don't listen to what the buyer is saying because he/she is obviously unfamiliar with e-cheques or is trying to pull a fast one by trying to get you to post the item out before payment has cleared.-->♥<-- Sugar Coated Owl -->♥<--

I agree with the others, if it is a UK buyer then the echeque will take at least 10 days to clear. Keep your buyer informed all the way but however irritated they get do not send the item until echeque clears.
The only other thing I would add is that I have found that recently when I have received an echeque from a US buyer they do clear in the 4 days suggested by paypal.

I have had payment by e cheques on a few occassions. Once, having received an e cheque payment, I contacted the buyer to say paypal had advised clearance would not be until such an such a date. Basically ended up refunding the e cheque payment and the buyer came up with an instant paypal payment.
My point, how does an e cheque payment come about?0 -
steve1905 - They come about randomly, I've refunded them in the past and asked for them to be made again and they've always come through instant.
YvonneCrossland - Drop PayPal an e-mail and ask them when it will clear, they do it respond quickly and will clear it if it's lapsed the clearance date.2p off is still 2p off!0 -
My son bought his first item on ebay this weekend and accidentally hit the echeque paypal option instead of the instant bank transfer one
Its easily done for a newbie. He won't make that mistake again though !0 -
Just had an email through saying it has now cleared, I wonder if it had cleared yesterday but was taking a while to update?2025 - finally back comping after a stressful house move - send me fairy dust please0
