Turn the phone off when you go to bed or phone your service provider and ask them what the charge is.

Can I just ask why would you want an iPhone if it wasn't to use it on the net?

i think there is an automatic update on iphone - heard something about it doing this to people abroad and running up lots of money. The users werent even aware that the phone was trying to connect as it was doing it in the background- Radio 1 reported it so there may be something on the bbc.co.uk/radio1 website (newsbeat?) about sorting it.
Something to do with disabling auto data downloads in the settings menu but I dont have the iphone so not sure

ah ha! I signed up to online account thingy to see if my faffing had stopped it and saw this
GPRS charges are billed at midnight

    GPRS charges on your bill
At midnight, our billing system adds up your GPRS usage for that day. This is then shown as a single charge on our billing system and on your bill.
so I assume I get charged 85p for the times I tap an internet app then realise I have no wifi and quickly quit - nice. I really should ask to change my tariff :o

eta - don't know why this has only happened this month though

If you bought the phone about 13 months ago, you may have been getting the 12 months of free wifi and data useage. Then this month, you're being charged because you don't have the free stuff anymore.

If that's the case, you may have done yourself out of 12 months of free internet.

I'm not on an iphone tarriff so never had free t'internet, I've had it for about 3months. The charges might have started when CPW\o2 realised I've got one though. I got a txt a while back saying something like We've noticed you have an iphone but aren't on an iphone tarriff.
I've never been warned about this daily thing though

Upon realising you have an iPhone, they may have enabled on their end, "visual voice mail" which relies on a data connection for this facility.

Maybe you changed/added email accounts and your settings tell your iPhone to check for new mail at set intervals (see Settings/Mail/Fetch New Data and set to Manually).

Have you tried calling O2/CPW to explain your bill?

can I check/switch off visual voicemail?
    all fetch/push is switched off
I know I'll probably have to call them but I hate talking to strangers :o (yes I'm weird I know)
