Paid leave for Volunteering work

    For this financial year M&S are allowing every member of staff 1 day paid leave to volunteer for any registered charity. It is part of their Plan A initiative and it shows that they are supporting it financially.

    I'm sure there are other companies that do the same but there would have to be a structure to it, an ad hoc basis where someone takes a few days off whilst other people don't know about the scheme wouldn't work.

    Why didn't you keep a week back?

    I've planned my holiday very well. Since I started in Beg of Sept I've only had 6 days off work( 3 for christmas and another 3 for volunteering with youth group), and been foricing myself to keep going and saving them up for Family and friends holiday.

    I havn't been wasting them as your suggesting with your post above.

    From teh pov of teh employer would they deem it neccessary to allow you to do it, depends really, cant imagine companies doing in the current climate when theres other people who could do your job

    If you're there for a year you have to have at least 20 days (plus bank holidays), so why not use some annual leave for this camp?

    because he used up the balance of his leave on summer holidays, see first post.
  • Forgive me if this is way out there, but surely the point of volunteering is to help others, not worrying about the pay you can get out of it. If you have no holidays left, then perhaps you should ask if you can take it as unpaid leave, then it would truly be volunteering, rather than helping out with something you are interested in, on your annual leave from your paid work *shrugs* There is no harm in asking your boss but I doubt many companies, including major ones like Virgin would be happy to do this. After all some people may take the mick and actually go on holiday instead on the company time, rather than volunteering. Good luck :D

    A number of companies do offer paid leave for voluntary work as part of their CSR policy. Some stipulate it must be for the company's sponsored charity, some leave it up to the individual. The part of Virgin I worked in was quite flexible about this.

    However, I think for someone on a year's contract it's very unlikely this leave would be paid. It's something you do because it develops the employee - if you are leaving very shortly afterwards then it's not likely the employer will get the benefit.

    You can always ask.
