We are having a lot of work done on our house, mainly by one reputable builder and other people recommended by him, he does very good work and is reliable however...
We had, until today, an asbestos ceiling in our garage. we have a big concrete hole half full of water in the garden thats got some rubble in it and will be concreted over completely very soon so the builder suggested he got his labourer to clear everything out of our garage today, strip the panels of asbestos down, hoover up (i know, i know...) then put everything back.
Unfortunately, i agreed to this, i know now it was completely stupid. Everything is back in the garage, there were multiple tiny pieces of asbestos on the floor, still some bits around nails on the ceiling of the garage and there appears to be a layer of white dust over everything in there.
Does anyone have any advice about what on earth we do? I dont really want to get the builder in trouble, but if we call in an asbestos specialist they will want to know what on earth happened i presume?
I feel so stupid for agreeing to this yesterday, but what with being tired and stressed from all the work we were easily persuaded by the builder.

It is probably asbestos cement sheeting with a very low asbestos content.
Our local tip (Sorry Recycle center) will take it, provided it is in plastic bags.
I would not worry too much about it.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
I had some abestos board removed on Wednesday the guys that did it had hazmat suits everything was sealed off with an airlock the full ET experience, they also had to wait till someone for the Lab signed the job off room was left cleaner the the rest of my house ...I'd make sure they have a ticket to remove asbestos, If so get the lazy sods back in to do a proper job0

Thanks for the reply. It looked a little bit like plaster board so its either asbestos cement sheeting or insulation board. I know the exposure weve had so far carrys a relatively low risk to it, im just concerned about what do about the dust? As we are having work done there is a lot of stuff out there from bedrooms, etc.0

This was one guy, in a jacket, with a diy style face mask, using our home hoover (hepa filter at least...) to clear up. He obviously broke the stuff off the ceiling with force and they most certainly do not have a license to do this sort of work.0 -
My gut tells me to get a licensed asbestos contractor in to sort it, but i dont want to get the builder in the sort of trouble he would be in if they reported him. hes done a great job at everything else and has a good reputation0

In any case there shouldn't be dust lying about everywhere.
That is the dangerous stuff..Not Again0 -

Cowboy springs to mind....he has put not only you and your family health at risk, but his workmen too.
Im the first to admit this last decade has gone health&safety mad, but this is horrid stuff and if his guys are working with asbestos often and not wearing the proper kit they are also taking the fibers home to there familys.
what ever happened to common sense...(not aimed at you)
Get them back in regardless if its asbestos dust or plasterboard you contracted them for the job and its only half done as they should have cleaned up after themselves0 -

certainly cowboy in relation to this, weird that hes so competent with everything else. Weve heard nothing but good things and he and his father have pretty much built half of our village0 -
You mentioned the hole in the garden, is that where he's put the asbestos?0
-
He saw your hole and conned you into agreeing so he avoids the cost of disposal
If he had done this properly he would have had to pay a lot to dispose of it at a registered tip even if, as seems likely, it is the lowest risk form of asbestos, ie cement based sheeting. Most concils will allow househiolders to tip asbestos sheet but only at nominated sites and if it was my council there is a maximum weight limit you can get rid of and you must provide proof of address to stop you coming back again and again. Anyone else has to pay£££0
